The B!G Idea Dashboard > Team > Bottle Binners – St Leos College

Why as a team did you choose to focus on this challenge?

My team and I chose to focus on the challenge because climate change is becoming a bigger and bigger issue in our future and the future of our children. The world has a goal called the sustainable development goal and we need to at least read half of those gold before 2013 which is only eight years from now. Another reason we chose a challenge because littering is a big problem that affects nature, wildlife and human life and and example of this is how illegal dumping thank you for stunt plant growth and this happens every day .

What do you know now about the challenge that you didn't know before?

What I learned while doing this challenge is that America alone produces an average £4.4 of rubbish per person every day with only 1.5 one of those pounds being recycled per person per day. I also learned that more than 300,000 tons of plastic are estimated to be late and each year, these different plastics are then found in rivers or oceans which then affects Sea Life more, for example The coral reef is slowly getting bleached because of the sudden changes in temperature and pollution. If or when these were speech and dies they were really come back

What have you learnt about your Hero?

Our hero is a new upcoming singer called Sha Kira . She lives by the sea in a small house. Her problem is that later is very evident in her career and home life. She sees big amount of litter of the concert on the ground such as bottles and food cartons. In her Homelife she always says later on the beach and pavements and is afraid to let her small children go swimming in the ocean is because of this .

If you could improve one thing for your Hero what would that be?

If my team and I could improve one thing for our hero it would be to make the oceans cleaner, i’m not just for our hero for everyone. Pollution in the oceans and rivers does not just affect humans it also affects wildlife and plant life majorly . Turtles a strangled every day by straws and beer can rings . If she feels the water is too dirty for her children imagine how bad it is for the animals living in the water .

Do you have any ideas for a potential solution? No matter how raw, share them with your Mentors for feedback.

Consolation we are considering bottle banks that take in plastic bottles and gives out gift cards or vouchers or even money in return for recycling . This would significantly change pollution as a whole as people will be getting something out of recycling so it won’t feel like a chore . It would also encourage children to tidy up after themselves when there is a guaranteed reward for doing so .

Ask your Mentor anything …. This is a chance to ask your Mentors a direct question relating to your Big Idea.

Our idea is to make bottle banks that can give out awards to people to recycle one or more bottles . Could you point out any major flaws in our design? And if so can you tell us any ways that we can prevent these flaws ? We carried out a survey in our school and we found that The majority of students did not recycle the plastic so that the buy , do you think if we met this product people would use it ?
