Our Idea

Why did your team choose to focus on this challenge?

We chose this challenge as the cost-of-living crisis is something that if affecting the whole of Ireland, not just homeless people. It affects middle-income families, higher income families and lower-income families alike. Housing prices have gone up so people who do not have a house have practically no chance of buying one if they don't have a decent job.

What have you learned about the challenge that you didn't know before?

We have learnt through researching for this project that approximately 13,531 people are affected by homelessness in Ireland. Around 3,00 of these individuals are children.

Outline the specific problem you would like to solve for your Hero and two or three solutions you think would help.

We would like to solve the problem of a lack of decent, livable wages for people who have not gone on to higher/third-level education. Two solutions that we think would help are: -Easily accessible resources for jobs, such as newspapers, websites and phone numbers. -Free confidential support through counselling or hotlines.

Ask your Mentor anything.

For our Big Idea, we are considering creating a building that houses a large variety of different types of resources for people who are homeless or who are struggling to find a steady income. In our idea, we have a computer room dedicated to online resources (links for available jobs etc.). Is it feasible to charge one or two euro for access to such a service? We will have books and newspapers for those who will not be able to afford them.
