Our Idea

Why did your team choose to focus on this challenge?

We decided to choose mental health because it is very prominent in young people these days. Statistics from the World Health Organization reveal a 13% increase in reported mental health disorders over the past 10 years. Globally, suicide rates are extremely high among young adults — suicide is the second-most common cause of death reported for those age 15-29. as this is really close to our age and the fact that we've met people with mental health problems makes us want to make a difference.

What have you learned about the challenge that you didn't know before?

We were surprised to learn the fact that mental health problems start at a very young age, they start around the age of 14. Most of it is caused by trauma and stress, social media also plays an important role in the causes of mental health.

Outline the specific problem you would like to solve for your Hero and two or three solutions you think would help.

The problem our hero faces is that she has a lot of pressure from her immigrant family to do well in school along with the pressure of doing a part-time job to support her family. She also deals with a huge social anxiety and doesn't have many friends. Our first solution might be to talk with the parents and ask them to loosen up the pressure they put on her, the second solution is to help her make more friends and expand her social circle. We want to encourage our hero to prioritise activities that promote relaxation and well-being, such as exercise, mindfulness, hobbies, or creative outlets.

Ask your Mentor anything.

What is our goal and the scale of it? How do we achieve our goal with maximum achievable quality and effectiveness?
