Our Idea

Why did your team choose to focus on this challenge?

Our team chose to focus on this challenge because mental health is a very topical issue in todays society especially with people our age. We chose to focus on mental health because as we grow up we want to see changes made to support people and their mental health. We believe mental health is a very important topic to be focused on as it affects your overall wellbeing and your mood day to day. We wish to make a change in how mental health is treated in our country.

What have you learned about the challenge that you didn't know before?

We discovered that Ireland reportedly has one of the highest rates of mental health illness in Europe, being 3rd out of 36 European countries. This motivated us even further to create our big idea targeted for people struggling with mental health in our country, since it could be anyone around us struggling even if we don't know it. We also found out that younger people have higher rates of mental health illnesses compared to older people. This affects us because its hard to see people our age around us suffer and not say anything.

Outline the specific problem you would like to solve for your Hero and two or three solutions you think would help.

Our hero is a leaving cert student who suffers from stress and anxiety, and is too busy to speak up or look for help. Our solution that we think would help is a mental health journal, specifically designed to be a safe space to unwind and express your feelings/issues. It would be somewhere where our hero can feel heard and deal with the stress accompanied with doing the leaving cert. The mental health journal would include a mood tracker to track your emotions from day to day, rating how your day was, somewhere to write about your day, supportive quotes, to do lists, gratitude lists, a sleep tracker and much much more. This journal has many benefits for your mental health. It helps you to express your feelings and thoughts somewhere safe where you won't be judged. It increases ones ability to communicate emotions. Although it's only a small step taken to improve your mental wellbeing, in the long run its of huge benefit. Our big idea is targeted to anyone who struggles with their mental health, but mainly young people that are too nervous or shy to speak up about issues they may be having.

Ask your Mentor anything.

Have you ever struggled with mental health? And if you have would you see yourself using our mental health journal.
